Aviators are back, the need for speed is more than ever! We’re going to have big, fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one, but a progression for Maverick, says Tom Cruise

Talk about the much-anticipated sequel to 1986's "Top Gun", well its definately happening!

Development of the movie began in 2010 when Paramount Pictures made offers to Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott to make a sequel to Top Gun. When asked about his idea for a new Top Gun film, Scott replied, "This world fascinated me, because it's so different from what it was originally. But I don't want to do a remake. I don't want to do a reinvention. I want to do a new movie. The movie will reportedly focus on the end of the dog fighting era and the role of drones in modern aerial warfare and that Cruise's character, Maverick, will fly an F/A-18 Super Hornet.

After Scott's suicide, the sequel's future remained in question. However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer remained committed to the project, especially given Cruise's and Kilmer's interest. On June 2017, Cruise revealed that the title would be Top Gun: Maverick, with Harold Faltermeyer returning as composer for the sequel. Cruise further stated that, “Aviators are back, the need for speed is even more. We’re going to have big, fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one, but a progression for Maverick.”

"Top Gun" focused on risk-taking pilot Maverick and his family-oriented wingman, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards). The bromance ended tragically, with Bradshaw dying after ejecting from their stalled jet. The new film will feature Maverick, now a flight instructor, mentoring Goose's grown son (we caught glimpses of the boy in the first movie during the "Great Balls of Fire" performance in the barbecue joint). Cruise's main "Top Gun" adversary, Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Val Kilmer), will be back. Kilmer, who has battled throat cancer, has been playfully campaigning to face off with Cruise on social media and was spotted in "Maverick" headquarters in San Diego. Kilmer, 58, confirmed the news on social media, saying he was "officially in the sequel." He even hinted at a fan's request to see a replay of the infamous beach volleyball game.

Maverick  was also spotted by paparazzi, gunning an expensive superbike. Apparently Cruise was spotted riding a motorcycle on the "Maverick" set So as to pay a homage to this classic scene. Maverick has traded in his Kawasaki GPZ900R for a Kawasaki Ninja H2R, a track focused super sportsbike priced at Rs 50 lakhs in India.

"Maybe Cruise's character also got a pay raise?".
